Public Housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for low-income to moderate families, elderly persons and persons with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers federal aid to local housing agencies to manage the housing for residents at rents they can afford. We serve nearly 6,200 residents with an inventory of approximately 3,016 units. The St. Louis Housing Authority’s portfolio includes 38 family developments, 5 mixed population developments, and 4 senior developments throughout the City of St. Louis.
The Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher) Program is a federally funded, locally administered rental assistance program that helps low-income families, the elderly and the disabled afford decent and safe housing in the private market.
The Department of Resident Initiatives provides support services to SLHA residents receiving Public Housing or Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher) assistance.
