How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online via our RentCafe Portal.

Completing an online application is not an offer of housing and is subject to SLHA’s review and approval. Applicants will receive a confirmation number to acknowledge successful transmission of the application. Each household may only apply once.

When funding is available, applications will be selected based on preferences. Families will be placed on a preliminary list and pulled to establish a waiting list. Applications resulting in a tie in preferences will be sorted on the waiting list in date and time order.

SLHA will determine family bedroom size based on its occupancy standards. Please note that the one-bedroom and 0-bedroom waiting lists are combined. This means that an applicant who has applied for a one-bedroom unit may be offered a 0-bedroom unit. Refusal of the 0-bedroom unit offer without good cause will result in the applicant’s removal from the waiting list.

After You Apply

If you are added to the waiting list for the Public Housing program, you will be notified by mail when your name comes to the top of the waiting list or if we are updating our files. If you do not respond to our notifications, or your letter is returned from the post office, your name will be removed from the waiting list.

Please keep your personal contact information up to date. After applying, you are required to update any changes in your name, address, phone number, email address, income and family size. You must notify SLHA within 10 business days of the change.

Notify us of the change in Rent Café (preferred) or you may submit a Change of Information Form for Public Housing applicants or a Change of Information Form for HCV applicants, in person or at the development site for which you applied. You may also mail it to:

Reasonable Accommodation

If a person with disabilities requires reasonable accommodation, or has extenuating circumstances that prevent the submission of an online application, paper applications are available. Please contact SLHA for assistance at (314) 531-4770 or TDD – (314) 286-4223.

Verification that an applicant qualifies for a reasonable accommodation must be attached to the paper application. Please note that a confirmation number will not be provided to applicants submitting a paper application, and SLHA will not be responsible for postal delivery delays or errors.

Fraud Warning

It’s important that the information you provide on housing assistance application and recertification forms is true and accurate. The local housing agency, HUD, or the Office of Inspector General will check the income and asset information you provide with other Federal, State, or local governments and with private agencies. You are committing fraud if you sign and submit a form knowing that you provided false or misleading information.

If you know of anyone who provided false information on a HUD housing assistance application or recertification or if anyone tells you to provide false information, please report the matter promptly to SLHA.
