Every success story begins with someone choosing to believe that a better future is possible. At the St. Louis Housing Authority, eight residents proved that with determination, support, and access to the right resources, goals once thought to be out of reach can become reality. Their achievements were celebrated during the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Graduation Ceremony and Life Builder Expo, an event that honored not only their accomplishments but also the partnerships and opportunities that helped make their journeys possible.
The FSS Program is a voluntary HUD initiative designed to help families build brighter futures through employment, education, financial empowerment, and personal goal setting. Serving Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) and Public Housing families, FSS connects residents with the tools and resources needed to achieve greater economic independence while reducing reliance on government assistance and rental subsidies.
Participants work one-on-one with an FSS Coordinator to create an individualized plan based on their unique goals and aspirations. Whether pursuing employment, advancing their education, improving financial literacy, preparing for homeownership, or strengthening life skills, participants receive personalized guidance and access to services that support long term success. Employment is not required to enroll in the program, allowing families to begin their journey wherever they are.
SLHA’s FSS Program is led by two dedicated coordinators who walk alongside participants every step of the way. Vera “Renee” Wren serves Housing Choice Voucher families, while Sredrick Robinson works with Public Housing families. Together, they cultivate relationships with employers, educational institutions, and community organizations to connect participants with valuable services including job training, employment counseling, childcare assistance, transportation resources, financial empowerment coaching, household skill development, homeownership counseling, adult education, and other supportive services tailored to each family’s needs.
One of the most distinctive benefits of the Family Self Sufficiency Program is the opportunity to build savings through an interest-bearing escrow account. As a participant’s earned income increases, their rent may also increase. Instead of simply paying a higher rent, the increase is deposited into an escrow account on the family’s behalf. Upon successfully completing the FSS contract, meeting their individual goals, maintaining qualifying employment, and satisfying program requirements, participants may receive the funds accumulated in their escrow account.
This year’s eight graduates earned a combined total of $134,997 in escrow savings, a remarkable achievement that reflects their dedication, increased earnings, and commitment to building long-term financial stability.
Our graduates have accomplished far more than completing a program. They have built new careers, gained confidence, strengthened their financial foundations, and demonstrated the determination to pursue goals that will create lasting opportunities for themselves and future generations.
The Life Builder Expo complemented the graduation ceremony by bringing together organizations committed to helping residents continue their journey toward self-sufficiency. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with community partners from the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Harris-Stowe State University, Saint Louis University, Fathers & Families Support Center and Rung for Women St. Louis.
The FSS Graduation Ceremony and Life Builder Expo serve as a powerful reminder that housing can be the foundation for opportunity. When residents are equipped with meaningful support, trusted partnerships, and access to valuable resources, they are empowered to build lives of greater stability, independence, and success.
