CORE Focus: Building Assets, Building Confidence, Building a Future

When LaVonda enrolled in the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program, she wasn’t just signing up for a service — she was making a commitment to her future. Today, as she prepares to graduate, she reflects on a journey marked by growth, discipline, and renewed confidence.

One of the most impactful parts of the program, she says, has been the educational workshops and guest speakers. “It’s helpful when the coordinators bring in speakers for resources and information,” LaVonda shares. “You learn about opportunities that can really move you forward.”

Beyond the knowledge gained, the ability to build assets has been life-changing. Through the FSS escrow savings component, LaVonda has been able to consistently save funds — something that once felt difficult to manage on her own. “The best part of the program is being able to obtain assets and save funds for when I complete the program,” she explains.

Looking ahead, LaVonda has clear goals. She plans to return to school and is determined to become a first-time homebuyer. With the close support of her FSS coordinator — who helps her research options, gather information, and stay focused — those goals no longer feel distant. They feel achievable.

When asked what she would say to other residents considering FSS, her encouragement is simple but powerful:
“It’s a good program to help you save, especially if saving is difficult. It gives you structure and support.”

As graduation approaches, LaVonda isn’t just completing a program — she’s stepping confidently into the next phase of her journey. Equipped with savings, knowledge, and a clear plan, she’s ready for what’s next.

Her story is a reminder that with the right tools and determination, progress is possible — and the future is within reach.
